Super Mario All-Stars

Four classic Super Mario titles on one cartridge make this a must-have item for Mario fans

Description

Super Mario All-Stars packed four Mario platformers from the NES generation onto a single SNES cartridge:

  1. Super Mario Bros.
  2. Super Mario Bros. "The Lost Levels"
  3. Super Mario Bros. 2
  4. Super Mario Bros. 3
All of the games received updated graphics as a part of the transition to the Super Nintendo system, in addition to improved sound brought by the superior 16-bit console. While the layout and physics of the levels remain unchanged, the improved sound, graphics and vastly superior musical capabilities of the Super Nintendo all work to provide a memorable and fun play experience.

The original Super Mario Bros. game released for the Nintendo NES, with its graphical overhaul makes a for a sublime playing experience for Mario fans old and new.

The "Lost Levels" game is actually the true sequel to the original Super Mario Bros. Released originally in Japan only, the Lost Levels features more of the action from the first game, but with a fiendish difficulty curve. Perfect timing, judgement and pure dexterity are needed to finish the eight worlds of this devilishly hard sequel. The sequel was considered by Nintendo to be too difficult for the European audience, and hence the Mario-ised version of 'Doki Doki Panic' we received. For more information on this, see Racketboy's feature on the Lost Levels .

Super Mario Bros. 2 could be considered the black sheep of the family. It is actually a remix of a game called 'Doki Doki Panic' - a game totally unrelated to Mario and friends in its Japanese release. Due to Nintendo's belief that we Europeans wouldn't be able to hack the difficulty of Mario 2, they chose to replace the player-character sprites with Mario ones - note that Goombas, Turtles and Lakitu's are nowhere to be seen in this game. However the most obvious feature of this game that makes it stand out from the other Mario games is that jumping on enemies' heads doesn't kill them - instead we ride on top, and grab them from underneath us to throw at other enemies (along with a plethora of vegetables and bombs which can be pulled from the floor to throw at enemies)

Super Mario Bros. 3 was a technological revolution at the time of its release - the gorgeous visuals, sound and music which made the original feel like an Atari 2600 game made this game a unique (at the time) Mario gaming experience. The introduction of more varied powerups including the raccoon tail for flying, and the wonderful yet rare "Hammer Brothers" suit gave the game a replay value unseen in previous Mario games.
